Check out my story for a comparison between the 377 and C-38B. Like the C-38B, this microphone runs off of phantom power or an internal battery. This one also has the typical M, M1, and V1 settings, which work and have a very subtle change of the bass on the overall sound. Overall, this is a great vintage condenser that doesn’t come up for sale too often. Compared with other condensers that offer a similar sound, this one is at a great price point. After the success of the RCA 44, microphone companies in different areas of the world made their own versions of larger ribbon microphones. For the French it was the Melodium 42B; for the Dutch it was this Philips 9559. They didn’t make many of this model as it was the top of the line and very expensive to make. Only a few made their way overseas to the USA! This microphone is big and heavy with a nice deep sound. It has been restored, which included removing a resistor used to lessen the proximity effect (for broadcasting). It now has its full bass, and would work well in all of the same applications as the RCA 44. This one is currently wired up for 200 ohms, but could easily be switched to 500 if desired. The base also has a threaded hole which will come with an adapter to a standard stand. This is an incredibly rare ribbon microphone that you likely won’t see for sale again! Sennheiser began building microphones in 1945, reproducing a microphone for a company called Siemens. In 1947 they designed and made their first microphone ever, the DM2. The DM2 was a huge success in the broadcast industry, and ultimately started the great success of Sennheiser (First known as Labor W). This DM2 sounds pretty incredible for how old it is, which is telling of the quality that Sennheiser started its company with. This one has a very nice and smooth mid-range. It doesn’t get harsh in the high end, retaining it’s smooth character overall. It has the original connector which I have wired up with a new cable to XLR. This one will come with a shock mount that holds it nice and snug. This is a rare microphone and great piece of history. GEC modeled this microphone after the BBC-Marconi type AX. These microphones rarely come up for sale, let alone in near mint condition like this one! This GEC has a very natural and smooth sound that I’d recommend on drums, guitar amps, horns, and more. As this microphone was made in the late 40’s, it’ll have the best results on loud sources but is usable on acoustic type instruments with a nice pre. This one has a large horseshoe magnet, so you’ll need to be conscious of its location in a room to avoid noise. This one has a new Geistnote transformer, cable to XLR, and new ribbon! While STC’s most famous microphone was the 4038 Ribbon microphone, they also made dynamic’s (one of the more well known being the “Ball and Biscuit”). This 4105 has a very open sound due to the holes in the body. It has a nice mid-range and high end brilliance on acoustics, vocals, and drums. It doesn’t handle high pressure sounds particularly well, so I’d mainly recommend this one on acoustic instruments. The connector alone on this one is sought after, as it fits 4038’s, Altec 639’s, and more. These really don’t come up for sale often, so this is a rare chance to own one of STC’s lesser known models. The 74-B was one of RCA’s lower priced microphones that was meant to serve as an every day utility microphone. Despite the lower price, RCA made the 74-B with the same high quality as their other famous ribbon microphones. These feature large magnets with a medium ribbon width that creates a nice full sound! I’d recommend the 74-B on guitar amps (there’s something magical about these on small tube amps), acoustics, drums, horns, and more. On acoustic sources this microphone has an old colored sound, but it really opens up when you place it on a loud source (guitar amps). You’ll have to be conscious of room placement with these because of their large magnets and old transformers. This 74-B has a new cable to XLR \/ new ribbon and is ready for years of use.
