Altec 639A Ribbon / Dynamic Microphone
Here’s an Altec 639A from the early 1950’s! These microphones have both ribbon and dynamic elements, which can be blended together or used separately. This is the A version, so it includes C, D, and R settings (C: Combination, D: Dynamic, R: Ribbon). These Altec 639’s were a classic for studios and stages through the 40’s to early 60’s. They can achieve a nice colored sound on guitars, vocals, and horns, or work well in front of a kick drum. This 639A has some wear throughout the body and especially to the top (these are large heavy mic’s that were commonly dropped over the years). As these are old they do need a large amount of gain from a nice pre-amp! This one has it’s rare original stand connector that locks into the microphone and mounts to any standard stand. Grab a piece of history in this Altec 639A Ribbon / Dynamic microphone!
